What is battle rape?

Battle rape is a term used to describe the sexual violence and rape that occurs during times of war and armed conflict. It is a brutal tactic used by military forces or armed groups to terrorize and exert control over enemy populations.

Battle rape can take various forms, including gang rape, sexual slavery, and sexual torture. It often targets women and girls, but men and boys can also be victims.

The use of sexual violence in conflict is a violation of international humanitarian law and can constitute war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Despite this, battle rape continues to be a widespread and underreported problem in conflicts around the world.

Efforts to address and combat battle rape include advocacy for stronger legal frameworks, prosecution of perpetrators, support for survivors, and prevention strategies within military and peacekeeping operations. International organizations, such as the United Nations, also work to raise awareness and provide assistance to survivors of sexual violence in conflict.
